Sonji Wright was born in Memphis, Tennessee. Her earliest musical roots grew during her childhood as a  little girl, while talking piano lessons that eventually paved the way for her to play and sing for the church choir in her home church, Pastored by her very own father, the late Reverend Hugh Morris of New Fellowship Baptist Church In Memphis, TN. Her gift and unmistakable talent, developed with such a distinct and soulful expression, that she was accepted in every audition and won in every competition that she performed in. 

 

Sonji majored in music at the University of Memphis and sang Opera.  She starred in the "Boris Godunov" opera as a lead vocalist.  She represented the state of Tennessee in the America's Youth in Concert while growing up and was an intricate part of the tour performance in Europe where the album was produced. In 2003, she was featured in the Memphis local newspaper for writing the gospel music for the Film Festival nominated movie, "Take me Back to Beale," ---Filmed in Memphis, Tennessee. She's a five time nominee of The Gospel Awards of Memphis and a three time winner.  Recently, she's became a featured artist in the Gospel Bridge Awards in Memphis.  She has been graced to perform with such artists as Daryl Coley, Douglas Miller, and Clifton Davis.  She has been noted as on of Memphis' best artist.

 

Her 2004 musical project is a single CD entitled, "Too Close 2 Heaven" which is a piece of her independent work.  Sonji's release latest album release titled 'SIT BACK' has eight wonderful songs that you would not forget.  This is a great work of art. Sonji's latest single titled 'He Cares' has covered gospel radio stations and has had great feedback from listeners. Sonji is an accoplished Singer, songwriter and musician which leads to the word multitalented. The best is yet to come for recording artist Sonji Wright.
